It is the policy of Bryan Texas Utilities, as adopted in the City of Bryan Resolution #1363, to continue to service, for a reasonable period, a delinquent residential customer permanently residing in an individually metered dwelling unit when that customer establishes that discontinuance of service will result in some person who resides at that residence becoming seriously ill or more seriously ill.
Any customer seeking to avoid termination of electrical service under this Critical Care policy must take the following actions.
- Provide a letter to BTU from a physician containing the following minimum information: Patient's name and address, the basis for the physician’s recommended medical alert extension, a statement by the doctor that termination of utility services would create an immediate life-threatening situation, the physician’s signature, and the date on document issued within the past 30 days upon receipt of the letter from the physician. BTU will flag the account as a Critical Care Customer and keep the letter on file.
- If a Critical Care Customer's account becomes subject to disconnection under Ordinance Resolution No. 1363, Exhibit A, a registered letter will be sent to the customer advising they have two weeks from the date of the receipt of the letter to pay the past due amount or the services will be discontinued.
- On the day of the scheduled disconnect, BTU will make an effort to contact the customer prior to disconnection. A record shall be made of this notification.
