BTU is proud to be one of the more than 2,000 public power utilities across the United States that is committed to delivering reliable and affordable power to those we serve. We've been locally, publicly-owned by the City of Bryan since 1909, and we serve the citizens of the Brazos Valley, not far-off investors. Learn more about how public power delivers for the Brazos Valley below.

Affordability

Public power utilities like BTU are not-for-profit entities owned by the communities we serve. We provide electricity to our customers at rates that only seek to recoup costs, not line the pockets of investors. As a result, homes powered by public power utilities paid 14% less than homes powered by private, for-profit utilities in 2024.

We deliver savings for our rural customers as well. BTU's rural residential customers enjoyed a 15% lower rate compared to the Texas Co-op average.

Reliability

Customers of public power utilities lose power less often.

Customers of a public power utility experienced an average of 1.5 fewer hours without power than customers of other utility types in 2024, outside of major adverse events, and nearly six (6) fewer hours without power during major events.

Giving Back To Our Communities

Public power utilities are embedded into the fabric of their communities and support a range of community programs. Local examples include BTU’s support of the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce, Brazos Valley Food Bank, Salvation Army, and yearly scholarship and Youth Tour programs. Public power’s contributions to their communities were 9% higher than what private utilities contributed in 2022, as a percent of electric operating revenues.

Local Service, Local Decision Making

Like public schools and libraries, public power utilities are owned by the community and overseen by a local city council and appointed board of directors that live in the communities their decisions affect. Likewise, our employees are your neighbors, and when an issue arises, you can speak to us directly. Citizens have a direct voice in utility decisions and policymaking.
